Giant squid have been a source of fear and curiousity since ancient times. From
tales in the Pacific of a cracken, a sea monster supposedly capable of swallowing an ship whole, to Scylla in Greek mythology,
these beasts long thought myth still hold a sense of mystery.
Specimen have been found beached or stranded, mostly in New Zealand. No one has ever captured or
observed a live giant squid in its natural habitat. Until 2004, no one had even seen a live one, but Japanese researchers
managed to take a few snapshots. The squid is a symbol of mystery, discovery, and our true final frontier; the seven
seas.
